An A4 form letter on Air New Zealand letterhead from the Chief Executive, M.R. Davis, dated 5 February, 1980 responding to a correspondent in relation to the Mt Erebus air disaster.
The Air New Zealand DC10 sightseeing flight to Antarctica crashed into Mount Erebus on 28 November, 1979 killing all 257 aboard. Although initially blamed on the whiteout conditions that prevailed on that day, further investigation of the crash showed an Air New Zealand navigational error and a cover up resulting in about $100 million in lawsuits.
A tragic reminder of an important day in New Zealand history.
