Elizabeth Hamilton (Countess Gramont) note signed 1699

Note in the hand of one of the favourite courtiers of King Charles II, Elizabeth Hamilton (1641-1708).

The document is a receipt in Hamilton's hand dated October 20th 1699 and signed by her.

Elizabeth Hamilton was born in 1640 in Strabane, County Tyrone, Ireland. Daughter of the Hon Sir George Hamilton 1st Bt & Lady Mary Butler. she was a courtier first after the Restoration at the court of King Charles II of England in Whitehall and later, after her marriage to Philibert de Gramont in 1664 at the court of King Louis XIV where she was lady-in-waiting and Dame du Palais to the French Queen Maria Theresa of Spain. 

She was known as 'La belle Hamilton' for her beauty and was one of the 'Windsor Beauties' painted by Peter Lely.
